これは極端な例だと思いたい

眠くてつらつら聴いていたらこれの歌詞をちゃんと知りたくなった。

Universal Mother

このアルバムが出たのは14年もまえ。今のアイルランドとは大違いの、ダブリンでは仕事もなくブラブラたむろってる若者が多数見られ、大学出ても職もなく、イギリスやアメリカやオーストラリアに高学歴者が流出していた、どん底期、かな。このころアイルランドに行ったことあったけど、実際に荒んでて、うらぶれた感は漂ってた。ただ、今よりはダブリンの人たちでさえ「古き良き田舎の人」っぽくてそれはそれで良かったんだけど。
その当時の曲だから、「アイルランド終わってるんだよ」という歌詞になっているが、淡々とした曲調ながら、あるいはだからこそ感じるイングランドに対するそこはかとない怨み節は、これは極端な例だよね、と思いたい気もする。思いっきり「私、イングランド嫌いだから」というアイルランド人に会ったことあるんだけどね。

An american army regulation
Says you mustn't kill more than 10% of a nation
'cos to do so causes permanent "psychological damage"
It's not permanent but they didn't know that
Anyway during the supposed "famine"
We lost a lot more than 10% of our nation
Through deaths on land or on ships of emigration
But what finally broke us was not starvation
But it's use in the controlling of our education
School go on about "black 47"
On and on about "the terrible famine"
But what they don't say is in truth
There really never was one

えーと、アイルランドについて話したいの。
特に「飢饉」について話したいの。
ホントはそんなもの全くなかったっていう事実についてね。
「飢饉」なんてなかったの。
ねえ、アイルランド人はジャガイモしか食べちゃいけなかったの。

アメリカ軍の規則には
一国の10パーセント以上の人を殺してはならない、というのがある。
だってそれをするとずっと続く「心理的傷」を負うから。
それはずっと続くんじゃないけど彼らは知らなかったの。
ともかくも「飢饉」とされている間に、
わたしたちはわたしたちの国の10パーセント以上の人を失った。
国で、あるいは移民船の中で死によってね。
でも最後にわたしたちを叩きのめしたのは飢えじゃなかった。
でもそれは教育の管理に利用されたの。
学校では「飢饉最悪の年1847年」についてやるわけ。
「ものすごくひどい飢饉」について何度もやるわけ。
でも彼らが言わないことに真実がある。
ホントはそんなもの全くなかったのよ。
