Markets reel in face of biggest losses since 9/11
Billions were wiped off share values yesterday as European markets suffered their biggest plunge since the 9/11 terror attacks.
Irish investors felt the full force of 'Blue Monday' as the spectre of a global recession gripped the markets.
It meant another €3.7bn was knocked off the value of Irish shares -- bringing overall losses since last February's market high to more than €42bn.
Pensions were the worst hit by the global slump.
Their value has dropped by €9bn already this year.

確かに１月はアイルランドのみならず欧米諸国では五月病のような時期だろうけど、このような書き方だと、もう自虐的ギャグなのかそれともよっぽど楽観主義者か分からないよ、とバブル崩壊（高校及び大学時代）→超氷河期（大卒時代）→高学歴ワーキングプア一（大卒後から今まで）直線の自分と自分と同じ世代としては、心配になってしまうにゃー、もう自分としては諦観してるんだけど。
そしてこの状況を政治に利用しようとするのはどこの国でも一緒だな。この先の予想なんておいそれとはできんだろうに。
However, the opposition parties last night warned Mr Cowen to give a clearer picture of the worsening economic situation to the public.
"We need to get more detailed information about what the implications are," Labour deputy leader and finance spokeswoman Joan Burton said. "Nobody wants to talk the economy down but we need to get a clearer picture of what is happening."
